View Records Sponsored partner optionIndiana State Police offers more than one criminal-history product. The online Limited Criminal History is name-based and Indiana-only; fingerprint-based state and national reports are separate services.
The correct route depends on the geographic scope and identity method the requesting organization actually requires.
For an Indiana State Police background check online, use Limited Criminal History only when its Indiana-only, name-based scope matches the request. ISP separately offers fingerprint-based Indiana Full and National Full criminal-history services. The requesting organization should identify which product it needs before a search is purchased.
| ISP product | Identity method | Practical scope |
|---|---|---|
| Limited Criminal History | Name, date of birth and other identifying fields | Indiana-only limited history; not a national search. |
| Indiana Full Criminal History | Fingerprint-based | Reported arrests, charges and dispositions in the Indiana state record; used for state review/challenge purposes. |
| National Full Criminal History | Fingerprint-based | State and federal jurisdictions included through the authorized national process. |
| Court file verification | Case number or party/court identifiers | Used to read the filed court record behind a repository entry. |
Indiana State Police defines Limited Criminal History as an Indiana-only name-based product. The search uses identifying fields such as name and date of birth, and ISP explicitly recommends a fingerprint-based national report when a more complete cross-jurisdiction history is required. That is a stronger description than marketing language because it tells the user what the online service is not designed to replace.
ISP also cautions that completeness depends on county participation. This means an LCH response should be read as the output of the Indiana repository under its participation model, not as a guarantee that every local or out-of-state record has been captured. Important entries should still be traced to the relevant court when the outcome matters.
The identity method changes what kind of confidence the result supports.
Do not use “background check” as shorthand for a scope the selected product does not have.
ISP’s county-participation caveat matters when a local event seems to be missing.
